Mini Exercise Bikes

Most of us have complicated, busy lives, which makes it a challenge to find time to exercise. A mini exercise bike is a good option for some. These miniature pedaling machines can be found in most major retail stores, as well as on television infomercials and on the Internet. There are three basic types from which to choose: friction resistance bikes, magnetic resistance bikes and motor-driven bikes.

Mini Exercise Bike Option: Friction Resistance Bikes

Friction resistance bikes are the least expensive type and might be best for those who aren’t ready to commit financially to a major piece of exercise equipment. These machines are easily found at local retailers for as little as $18.95. Friction resistance requires the user to exert effort to turn the pedals, and resistance is usually provided by way of a tension belt.

Mini Exercise Bike Option: Magnetic Resistance Bikes

Mid to high-priced magnetic resistance bikes generally cost $100 to $200. Just as the name suggests, the mechanism that provides resistance to these bikes is magnetic pull. Some prefer this machine because of its quiet operation and consistent, fluid pedal movement. Resistance is varied by adjusting a knob or with pushbuttons.

Mini Exercise Bike Option: Motor Driven Bikes

A third type of bike implements a DC motor drive system. This motorized bike has adjustable speeds, which make them a safer choice for older adults or those working to recover lost function. A motor-drive bike generally requires less effort than its counterparts, making it easy on the joints and a good way to increase range of motion.

Users can dial up the resistance and time on the bike in order to increase mobility gradually.
All models can be used on the floor — so feet can pump the pedals for a lower-body workout – or on a table – so hands can pedal to increase upper-body strength.

There are a myriad of machines consumers can chose from and many of them are relatively inexpensive, making them a popular purchase for those who are starting an exercise program. Usually little or no assembly is required and most higher-end models come with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Serious athletes might find these mini exercise bikes lack substantial pedal resistance and don’t offer them a satisfying workout. Pedals on friction resistance bikes often operate in a jerky fashion and if the bike’s base is narrow, can feel unstable. Some bikes are especially noisy to operate.

Mini exercise bikes are relatively lightweight, small and generally safe. Consumers can use a mini bike while sitting in their favorite easy-chair watching television or store one underneath their office at work to use throughout the work day. Some models include digital timers that display distance, time, repetitions and calories burned. One type allows users to play PC games while riding and automatically saves workout statistics to a computer.
